I think short fasts should NOT be compared to this. One or two days is quite nice, and does not adversely affect the body unless you have a health issue, such as diabetes, etc.

Ahh, the question is more what kind of juice didn't I drink!!

I had an entire head of celery every day, plus lots of greens (spinach, lettuce, silverbeet), other veges (carrots) & various fruits (tomato, melon, pineapple, apples, oranges). It was a while ago now, so I don't remember the exact details, but I know I used to drink about 50/50 pure vege juice vs pure fruit juice. So, that's about 3L of each a day.

Water is (of course) harder than juice - no nutrients for your body.

The difficulty is really just getting hungry, but it's no biggie - unlike longer fasts, you know it's only for a couple of days, so you don't need so much willpower. I'd just suggest if you're doing water not to plan heavy physical activities for late day 2 & especially day 3, otherwise you should be able to continue as normal. As long as you're not starved to begin with, your body will just be burning off food from your stomach, fat, etc, so it's not anywhere near as tough as it was for me (when I'd already been juice fasting for 30+ days, so had no fat left & nothing in my stomach).

Be warned though, it's quite possible your body/emotions will start detoxing, so you may feel more fragile, or have weird skin breakouts. It's all good, part of the process, just so you're not surprised if it happens. It all calms down when you start eating again.

Thank you for this. Everything I have read so far has been good, no-one has ever said anything bad about it. I might start with a 3 day water/juice fast and see how I go. The modern life/bad food takes its toll on me. Im always getting colds etc. I hope this shouldbe good for me!

Just one more thing, I heard the first 3 days were really difficult, any tips on getting through them? Is it possible to do a few days and still go about your normal daily routine?

Many thanks!

That's a good question.

My understanding is that by releasing these toxins, they get flushed OUT of your system, rather than stored. Additionally, while the body is an amazing device, it's not well geared to deal with many of the unusual toxicities of modern life - it needs assistance (hence the value of colonics, sweat lodges etc). This gels with what I've seen myself.

Water fasting has been done for thousands of years, by millions of people. I'm definitely not an expert. I suggest a quick google for a more complete answer.

You said:

"Typically a water fast works like this. You eat nothing, but drink lots of water. Your body survives by using up (in order):

1. whatever food is still in your digestive tract
2. your fat cells (which is where you store toxins, so these then get released - this is desirable)
3. your muscles (a 10 day fast you'll lose maybe 0.5->1kg/1-2lb of muscle)
4. tissues from your internal organs, in reverse order of importance"

What makes you think it's desirable to release the toxins in your fat cells through a fast? Your body stores these poisons, not toxins, in your fat cells because it cannot metabolize it normally. This is a mechanism the human body, and other animals, have evolved to deal with such chemicals. Releasing them through a fast will not cause the body to suddenly metabolize what it couldn't in the first place.

*laugh* oh, you're doing just fine in that regard.

Tell you what though, given how robust & consistent my health & physique have been over the last 20 years, watching both my body & mind go through such radical variation scared the living crap out of me.

Thanks for this. I always read so many glowing experiences about fasting but for me it is a double edged sword at times. So your journey and observations are definitely something I can relate to (although my tummy never looked that taut!!)
