The No Soap Experiment

I'm not really a fan of New Year's resolutions. How many do you end up keeping?

However, a new year's experiment — where you try something new, just for January? Ahh, that's awesome.

So, a few years back I read a book a day for all of Jan. That was.. entertaining, although I didn't do much else with my time.

Then I tried eating no meat for January a couple of years later. That lasted about 3 days, until I realised I'd have to learn how to cook tofu (Eww! No thanks!) whereupon I discovered the raw food diet — no cooking, no tofu? I'm sold! Which was great, and extended out more or less continuously from there.

This year, based on reading this, & this, I thought I'd try washing with no soap or shampoo for all of January.

To paraphrase the theory, one reason we smell is because of bacteria on our skin, which is amped up when we strip natural oils etc out using soaps (which also leave a thin film of chemicals on our skin). Skin is something which is vastly underrated, but given that it's our largest organ, we should probably consider a little more than we tend to.

There's also a theory that you should never put anything on your skin that you wouldn't eat. Since our skin is absorbent, I've gotta say, that holds a lot of water for me.

People that have done the "no soap" thing before say it takes a couple of weeks for your body to adjust. There's a lot of flushing of toxins, plus your body getting used to not having to constantly replace the oils. After that, things hum along — clean shiny hair, glowing skin, etc etc.

Personally? I've gotta say I'm skeptical. I have some unusual skin. It's very moist (a dermatologist once showed it to me under a microscope, saying it was the moistest skin she'd ever seen). I also have a hyperactive lifestyle — working out until physical exhaustion (ie, mega sweat+dirt) four times a week, & do occasionally get very slight patches of eczema if I'm under a lot of stress or don't clean super well. I also find that my pores clog up a little if I miss a patch on my leg, say, when I'm cleaning (particularly after hard exercise).

These are all very minor things, but I suspect they'll be exacerbated without soap.

Up until now I've found the best solution is to use a very mild, non perfumed soap. I also do dry skin brushing (when I remember, I'm a bit lazy on that front, I'll admit), which helps slough off dead skin cells.

Of course, I'll still use soap before food prep, after the bathroom, or if (like today) I get myself covered in oil up to the elbows. Best not to be a complete idiot & ignore all that science has discovered in the past 200 years.

Also, this does NOT mean no washing. Hell no. Just not using soap. I'll still be scrubbing my body as if I were using soap — so that friction will help clean off dirt etc. I already use a nail brush (without soap) to scrub real tough grime out — eg grass stains on the bottom of my feet after training.

At present I'm a few days in, and definitely in that "argh" stage. I'm going to up the skin brushing a bit, & have more regular showers to help my skin flush away any crud that's coming out.

By the end of January I should have enough data to make a definitive conclusion — for my own body at least. Up to you to figure it out for yourself!

My pediatrician advised me to not use soap on my kids with eczema unless there is actually something stuck on their skin that just water and a washcloth won't get off. It helps a lot to keep it under control.

I agree with you, it's best not to ignore all the wonderful advances that science has made but I also think that in some ways we can be too clean in our culture. Happy medium, that's my motto.

I'll be interested in seeing how your experiment works out! Sympathy on the argh phase.

Ha ha. Yeah, it's been a bit of a balancing act figuring out exactly what works best for my skin. Still, for the sake of a couple of inconvenient weeks, I'm all for gaining more data.

The super sensitive soap I've found isn't too bad, eczema wise, as long as I rinse it off completely. Old sweat seems to be much worse for me, frankly.

Funny, I'm thinking of doing the exact same thing this month! On my fourth shampoo-free day.

  • http://sidawson.org Si Dawson

How surreal. Maybe we're twins :)

  • eternalvoyageur

I'm very curious. Are you still using deodorants, or maybe the baking powder version ?

  • http://sidawson.org Si Dawson

Nope. I want to know what's going on — not to hide it. So, this means I'm washing a LOT, but I figure if there's toxins or whatever to flush out of my skin, the more I help it the better (without going completely batshit about it). I'm quite sensitive to smell, so I'm paying a lot of attention to it.

  • thatneilguy

I started doing the same thing on January 1. I am still using deodorant. So far, I've noticed it seems there's a lot less water to towel off of myself when I'm done. Maybe my skin is actually soaking it up rather than the soap allowing it to glide off? An interesting experiment, I'm pleased that there'll be someone else i can compare notes with…

  • http://sidawson.org Si Dawson

Huh. That's really interesting. I'll have to keep an eye out next time I have a shower. Thanks for pointing that out — I'll see if the same happens to me.

  • http://twitter.com/Korv_N Korv N S.

I did the no-shampoo thing for 6 months once. My hair never looked better, but it was a lot of work, and then life happened and I really didn't have the time to do it properly anymore. Still, thumbs UP!

  • http://sidawson.org Si Dawson

Hang on. Having great looking hair was hard work? Man, women are so confusing *grin*

  • http://ppeach.com/blog ppeach

Try cheap moisturiser (sorbolene or Vaseline intensive care) as soap alternatives in the shower, especially if eczema is an issue. Better hygene, oil somewhat preserved. I spent 2 years not using shampoo a long long time ago for your same reasons. It's not optimal if you're very active.

  • http://sidawson.org Si Dawson

    Moisturiser as soap? Really?

    a) how would that clean?
    b) wouldn't that just leave a different kind of residue on your skin?

Not disputing it works — I haven't tried it, so don't know (for my skin), just curious.

  • http://ppeach.com/blog ppeach

Yep, try it and see. "Recommended by 4 out of 5 dermatologists."
    A. Cleaning isn't about froth, that's a myth.
    B. Residue doesn't seem to be a problem. It mostly washes off with
    water.

  • http://sidawson.org Si Dawson

Didn't say it was about froth :)

But I'll give it a shot (after the experiment), see how it goes. Thanks for the tip!

  • http://twitter.com/Korv_N Korv N S.

I make it a point to spend as little time as possible on my hair on a regular basis, unless I'm straightening it, and that's a different story. Actually, the no-shampoo thing reeeeeeealy enhanced the curls, so maybe not so much a different story. Somehow. I've been drinking, I'm not sure.
I don't really have to worry about hair, for the most part! I've got a pretty good head of thick Mexican waves and curls, and I haven't dyed it in years and years and years, so it's pretty healthy anyway. =)

  • John SB

Well I'm glad I put off coming to Melbourne for a few weeks then. :)

  • http://sidawson.org Si Dawson

Interestingly, it's nowhere near as terrible as I expected it to be. Different, definitely but not terrible. It's.. been educational.

  • Aimoss

I use a crystal deodorant as opposed to a normal one, which works a treat, I combine with coconut oil sometimes also!

  • nellywhynot

    geez your blog is interesting!!!
I read about women not washing their hair for a month & 90% of them said their hair was miles shinier, silkier and healthier. I also knew a swedish chick who didn't use soap and she had the clearest skin and no smell! Hmmm. Might give this a try!!

  • http://eternalvoyageur.xanga.com/ Eternal*Voyageur

So how has it been ? Also, do you have a control person ? I have been bumping into hippies that seem oblivious to their smell, and it irritates me no end, so if I tried a no-deo experiment I'd have to ask other's opinion because I'd be worried that I've just adjusted to my new smell.
Don't bother cleaning with moisturiser (more chemicals) but maybe oil or soapnut might be interesting for me…

  • http://sidawson.org Si Dawson

Impossible to have a control person really — everyone's metabolism, lifestyle & habits are different. Just have to pay a LOT of attention.

You know, I was JUST about to write a followup. Tell you what, I'll give you a sneak peak (don't tell anyone, ok?)

Basically, despite an insanely active lifestyle, it's been pretty good. Minimising chemicals on skin = good. Not washing at all (which I think (dirty) hippies tend towards) is one thing, I wash a lot — can't help it, showers are great places to be. I found there was a small amount of natural smell. Not terrible, but enough for me to notice, but nothing that a little spritzing under the arms with some eau de toilette wouldn't sort.

Ok, more discoveries than that, but that's a teaser :)

I haven't used soap, on my face or body, or shampoo for over a year. I shower and wash my hair in plain water every day and regularly have baths with minerals such as Bi carb or Epsom salts. Initially I used a mineral deodorant spray (not the crystal) but now only intermittently. I was a little paranoid at first but every one assures me I have absolutely no odor from anywhere. It didn't take long for my skin and hair to regulate oil production and now my hair and skin are soft and not at all oily or dry. Even after a day in closed in shoes long pants and jumpers my feet and arm pits are totally fine. Amazingly I am assured by my partner that where it counts there is absolutely no smell at all even when I haven't had shower since the morning. The bodies natural oils and sebums have antibacterial and antifungal properties as do some minerals. I am absolutely not a hippy and constantly check with people I can trust as find this so unbelievable. I think the trick is you still wash regularly with water and judicious use of minerals. Also when I was a nurse I was involved in two studies. One at an infectious diseases hospital showed the best thing to wash your hands with was plain water and the other study in wound care also showed the best thing to wash wounds with was plain water too. I didn't believe it at the time but certainly with the wound care it proved correct.

  • http://sidawson.org Si Dawson

Well, I've gotta say, that's pretty damn interesting.

Have heard about using epsom salt in baths, but never had one. They're fizzy, right?

How regular are these "regular baths"?

  • Royalprincess1

I've just started this experiment going on two weeks now. I must say, my hair and skin have never looked better!! Pores on my face are coming unclogged and I'm not greasy or oily anywhere. Going to stick with this and see what happens… so far great results!

  • http://sidawson.org Si Dawson

Wow that's awesome to hear! Always reassuring when someone else gets similar results.. :)
